How to have a good relationship with food

Who wants to hate eating?D: It’s one of the best parts of a day:D Here are Izzy’s 10 ways to make your relationship with food as meant to be as Ross and Rachel:’)

1. Stop dieting. 
Just reading that sentence might have sent you into a panic. Relax — I’m not telling you to forget everything you know about healthy eating, I’m asking you to change your perspective. Diets are temporary (“I want to lose weight for my wedding.”). Diets are about numbers (“I want to lose 10 pounds.”). Diets are a metaphor for what we really want in life (“When I lose weight, I’ll finally be happy.”) Let go of these ideas. Instead, think about the long haul (“I want to be able to play with my grandchildren someday.”). Think about how you feel (“Eating quinoa gave me so much energy!”). Think about what you really want out of life (“I want to run a 10K.”). The tools, tricks, and mentality of dieting won’t fix your life or solve your problems, but thinking about what you want out of life and making decisions based on that will. 

2. Change your vocabulary. 
Can we all just agree that you were not “bad” if you had a piece of cake? That you were not “good” if you resisted seconds? These words are laden with the kind of judgment that’s the last thing you need when you are trying to learn how to approach food from a healthier point of view. You made a choice that either supported your health goals or it didn’t —- but that choice doesn’t make you “bad” or “good.” 

3. Think, shop, and eat like a French woman. 
There’s a reason why French Women Don’t Get Fat became a runaway bestseller, and it’s not because we all wanted to figure out how to be skinny and eat croissants for breakfast. With our focus on restrictive diets and punishing workouts, we’ve completely divorced food from pleasure. On the list of great pleasures in life, food is up there right after sex. So when you’re in the grocery store, really appreciate the sensory aspects of the food on sale: the colors, smells, the feel of the wet spinach leaves between your fingers. Visit a farmer’s market and chat with the growers about how they like to cook their crops. Taste your food and experience the deep delight of eating something delicious. 

4. H.A.L.T. 
Are you Hungry? Or are you Angry, Lonely, or Tired? Try to pinpoint what’s sending you the fridge. Is it a physical hunger or is it just boredom? If it’s hunger, by all means, eat up! But be aware if your desire to munch away is fueled by something else. 

5. Sit with a feeling.
 
If find yourself about to cuddle up with a box of chocolate cookies and you know it’s not because you’re hungry, try to just pause for a minute. Whatever the feeling is you’re attempting to eat away, sit with it. Feel all its discomfort. It feels bad doesn’t it? (No wonder we eat to get away from it!) Instead of masking those feelings with a binge, write down how you’re feeling or call an understanding friend. The feeling is still going to be there after a snack attack, but if you confront your emotions head on, you’ll find a better way to ease the pain. 

6. Start a food journal. 
Most of us have no idea what we eat in a day or how much. Start writing down what you eat, not necessarily as a way to lose weight, but just to see how what you eat makes you feel. After each meal or snack, jot down your post-eating sensations: Do you feel like you need a nap? Did you wait too long to eat and then overdo it? By connecting the way you eat with how you feel, you can notice patterns and, if necessary, change them. 

7. Ask yourself what you really want. 
You know when you’re not even hungry anymore, but dinner was good, and the lure of a second plate is right there within reach? You find yourself shrugging and thinking, “Ah, why not?” Instead of going for the second helping of food you don’t really want, ask yourself what you really want. Do you want a piece of dark chocolate? Do you want to get up from the table and go back to your kitting? Do you really, really want a pair of skinny jeans? Let what you actually want inform your decisions. 

8. Reconsider “treats.” 
When your boss tells you your TPS reports weren’t up to snuff and you still made it through the day without tears, it’s tempting to treat yourself to a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels. But is this really a treat? Or is there a chance that deep down, you know you’ll feel worse-off than you did before? Think about treats that will actually make you feel better: a new lipstick, painting your nails, stopping to pet every puppy you pass on the street. 

9. Nix peer pressure.
 
Dinner with friends after work is one way to catch up, but there are so many other options that don’t involve food and that annoying dessert tug-of-war. Go to a yoga class, bundle up and take a walk through the park, see that art exhibit that’s about to close, or bond over your embroidery and a cup of tea. 

10. Slow down. 
When I am so hungry that I am literally wolfing down my food, I’ll notice that I’m practically holding my breath. The same mindful breathing that can get you to relax is absent from hurried eating. Slow down. Take a bite. Take a breath. Pay attention to what’s happening right now: the tastes, the smells, the textures, the conversation you’re having over dinner. Take it all in mindfully and slowly…and enjoy!

1. Granola bars

Who doesn’t love a crunchy, chewy grab-and-go snack? But there’s no need to shell out big bucks or entrust our health to unpronounceable ingredients. Oats, nuts, berries, and honey star in this recipe and significantly cut back on costs.

Skip the boxed stuff and DIY it for a personalized cereal. These homemade bran flakes rival the store-bought stuff in nutrition and flavor. Add a small handful of dried fruit and roasted nuts for some extra crunch and flavor.

Swap that paper package of instant oats for classic whole rolled oats. Whip up a big batch at the beginning of the week and then soup up each serving with add-ins like fruit and spices.

Put down that Bisquick. Whipping up pancakes at home is an opportunity to add in whole wheat flour and raisins for fiber and a little sweetness without sugar overload. Plus, the added fiber helps us feel full and improve digestion.

5. Waffles

Leggo my Eggo! Skip the refined grains of classic toaster waffles and the exorbitant price of the healthier versions. Instead, try some hand-crafted whole-grain waffles. Extra points for using fresh-cut fruit instead of corn-syrup heavy Aunt Jemima’s.

6. Salsa

Take a page out of Slim Shady’s book and serve up some salsa. Boiling and blending creates a restaurant-quality dip that’s way better than the jarred stuff.

7. Guacamole

Guacamole’s an easy and stove-free snack to whip up on a warm, summer afternoon. Making it at home not only ups the freshness (and flavor), but also makes it easier to control saltiness and the heat. Pair with homemade tortilla chips for even more healthy points. Ole!

Dangerfood or not, this dip is delicious. And when restraining ourselves to a two-tablespoon serving, it costs less than a quarter. Plus, the directions are simple — just blend! No more $6 hummus tubs needed.

No need to be a professional chef to make cheese. Paneer and ricotta are ridiculously easy to make at home, and they’ll always be fresher than what can be bought at the store.

It’s like a miracle! It’s possible to turn ½ cup of yogurt into 2 quarts just by adding milk. Okay, so there’s a little more to the process than just stirring them together, but DIY yogurt saves a pretty penny and yields a fresher final product that’s easy to feel good about!

Homemade fruit snacks or “fruit leather” is a steal even when buying the fruit from the grocery store. Don’t buy the family-sized bag! Repurpose old tortillas as chips by lightly spraying with oil and baking. While any tortillas will do, we recommend the homemade ones below.

These Tex-Mex staples are actually a piece of cake to make. Simply combine flour, baking powder, oil, salt, and milk — no intimidating yeast! Swap in whole-wheat flour for added fiber and a richer texture. Gone gluten-free? These can also be made with corn flour.

The recipe for pita chips isn’t all too different from tortilla chips. Simply coat with oil and seasonings and bake. No more wasted pitas, no more wasted cash on the packaged stuff!

It’s not always easy to discern which breads are masquerading as health foods and which are actually good for you. But making bread at home helps clear things up real quick, since it’s easy to control exactly what ingredients go in the bowl. Since fresh baked varieties don’t contain preservatives, remember to eat within a week, or freeze for longer safe keeping.

17. Nut butters

It’s peanut butter-jelly time! Homemade nut butters eliminate the need for crazy preservatives and over-the-top fat and salt content. Just grind those nuts up for any variety of nut butter imaginable!

This one’s a Greatist favorite: toss some olive oil and balsamic vinegar into a nearly empty mustard jar and shake. It’ll get out those last drops of flavor from the mustard and serve as a simple storage container for the dressing. Not to mention it’s C-H-E-A-P. Or try one of these easy recipes for some variety.

19. Soup

Canned chili can be seriously disappointing. Instead, control the spiciness, type of meat, and overall fat and sodium content but going homemade. 21. Baked beans

Baked beans are a heart- and tummy-warming recipe, that doesn’t need to be ultra-heavy or sugary. Stick with dry beans, molasses, and just a few herbs and spices to keep it cheap and healthy.

24. Marinara sauce

Pasta sauce is the original sneaky way to add veggies to a meal, so why settle for the store-bought stuff? It takes just a few minutes of active prep to get the basic ingredients together, then just let it simmer.

25. Broth

Stock and broth seem like one of those things only fancy-pants cooks make, but they’re actually super-easy and a great way to use up stuff that’s already on hand. The basic recipe is water, bones or carcass, vegetables, and seasonings. (The seasonings are actually optional. Technically, broth is seasoned while stock is just a blank slate.)

26. Pesto

The crisp, green taste of pesto is best when made with ultra-fresh basil. Store-bought brands tend to compensate with loads of oil and salt. When that basil plant’s growing as quick as a weed, grab a few handfuls and combine with a touch of olive oil, cheese, pine nuts, and garlic. If basil’s out of season, capitalize on in-season greens like kale or spinach. (Bonus points for superfood greens!)

42. Sparkling water

Fruit Ice Cubes.

To prepare, crush the fruit you want to incorporate (kiwi, mango, cherries, limes, watermelon …) with some homemade lemonade, for example following this basic recipe. Then fill your bucket with the mixture and freeze.

When ready, add these cubes to your lemonade and enjoy new flavors.
